Step 1: Download Your Files from BuddyBoss
Log in to your BuddyBoss account at buddyboss.com. Go to My Account, then Downloads. You will see separate zip files for the BuddyBoss Theme, the Child Theme, the BuddyBoss Platform plugin, and the Platform Pro plugin if your plan includes it. Download all of them before you start. Do not unzip them; WordPress installs themes and plugins from the zip file directly.
Step 2: Install the BuddyBoss Theme
In WordPress admin go to Appearance, then Themes, then Add New, then Upload Theme. Select the BuddyBoss Theme zip file and click Install Now. Do not activate it yet. The parent theme needs to be present on the server, but you will activate the Child Theme in the next step, not the parent.
Step 3: Install and Activate the Child Theme
Repeat the upload process for the Child Theme zip file. This time, activate it. The Child Theme inherits everything from the parent BuddyBoss Theme but keeps your CSS changes and template overrides safe when the parent theme updates. If you activate the parent theme and customise it directly, every BuddyBoss update wipes your changes.
Step 4: Install and Activate BuddyBoss Platform
Go to Plugins, then Add New, then Upload Plugin. Upload the BuddyBoss Platform zip file and activate it. After activation you will see a setup wizard prompt in admin. You can run the wizard now or skip it and configure manually. We cover both below.
Step 5: Install and Activate BuddyBoss Platform Pro
If you are on the Launch or Scale plan, upload and activate the Platform Pro plugin the same way. After activation, go to BuddyBoss, then Platform Pro, and enter your licence key. The licence key appears in your BuddyBoss account under Licences. Activating Pro unlocks Courses, Memberships, and the other paid features, but they are not turned on by default. You enable them individually in the Components screen.
Step 6: Fix Your Permalinks
This step is small but skipping it causes 404 errors on member profiles and group pages. Go to Settings, then Permalinks, and make sure you are using Post Name or any custom structure (not Plain). Go to BuddyBoss, then Profiles, then Profile Fields. By default you get a basic name field. This catches people out regularly. If you activate the Courses component without activating Memberships first, the Courses menu item will not appear in your admin panel. Go to Components, enable Memberships, save, then enable Courses. The Memberships component also requires Stripe to be connected before you can sell anything.
